One of the most frequent questions I get as an Orange County portrait photographer is, "What should I wear?"

Your senior photos are a once-in-a-lifetime milestone. My goal is to create imagery that feels intentional and real—photos you’ll still connect with twenty years from now. While locations like The Muckenthaler or the cliffs of Laguna Beach provide the stage, your styling is what makes the story yours.

Here is my guide to choosing outfits that photograph beautifully and feel like you.

1. Prioritize Movement and Texture

  • The best senior portraits aren't static; they feel alive.
  • For a cinematic look: Choose fabrics that move with you—think flowy dresses, layered jackets, or lightweight knits.
  • Add depth: Texture adds visual interest without being distracting. Muted silks, corduroy, or even a well-fitted denim jacket create a rich, tactile feel in photos.

2. The Power of Neutrals and Muted Tones

  • While bright colors can "pop," they can also reflect unwanted tones onto your skin or clash with the landscape.
  • The Palette: I recommend earthy neutrals (creams, tans, sage green) or soft pastels. These tones allow your face and expression to remain the focus, rather than your clothes.
  • Avoid Logos: Large graphics or neon colors can date your photos quickly. We want "timeless," not "on-trend for two weeks."

3. Mix Your Vibes: The 3-Outfit Rule

I always recommend bringing at least three different looks to your senior session to give your gallery maximum variety:

  • The "Elevated" Look: Something sophisticated, like a sun dress or a structured blazer.
  • The "Lifestyle" Look: What you’d wear on a typical weekend—jeans and a high-quality tee or sweater.
  • The "Legacy" Look: This is where you bring your personality. It could be your varsity jacket for a Sports Media Experience, your favorite instrument, or even a vintage find that represents your style.

4. Footwear Matters (More Than You Think)

  • In many of my cinematic wide shots, your shoes will be visible.
  • Pro Tip: Make sure your footwear matches the "vibe" of the outfit. If we’re shooting in the dirt paths of Fullerton or the sand at the beach, bring a pair of comfortable walking shoes to change into between setups!
